China's Success - Based on Alliance with USA

China is one of the most successful economies in the world. However, one critical factor in this has been its relationship with USA.

The USA has been an ally of China for many decades. The first alliance was set up in the Nixon-Mao time.

The genius behind it was Henry Kissinger, one of the greatest diplomats of the USA.

Deng Xiao Ping - the economic political genius behind China's economic take-off in the 1970s and 1980s - also based his strategy on this China-USA alliance (on the economic level).

Deng Xiao Ping had two tracks to his foreign economic policy:
i) USA foreign investment into China - inviting USA companies in - from a wide range of sectors;
ii) Creating free enterprise zones in China in which foreign companies could 'exploit' China workers and its cheap conditions - in the way they wanted without any serious restrictions.

This China-USA alliance benefited China in the most dramatic way with a massive boost to its economic growth - as well as making it into a global economic super-power.

The USA also had benefits. It made mass cheap goods available to US consumers - and helped reduce the prices of many consumer goods. This freed the consumers to spend more of their money on 'luxury/leisure/lifestyle' (my 3 Ls) items.

I want to challenge the left and anti-imperialist ('third world' view in Mao's famous phrase - of developing countries) stereotype that USA is an economic evil. On the contrary, it has been one of the biggest practical helpers for developing countries. China was a major beneficiary. It has totally changed its global position in the world. So it is more a privilege to have had the alliance with the USA than in any way an evil - for China, in particular.

I am sure lots of other developing countries have really benefited from an alliance with the USA. Myths about the USA's evil role in the world - do not live up to any serious examination - specifically in the field of economics or even democracy.

I hope the left and anti-imperialist will thank the USA properly for helping China to rise in the world.

My analysis started off in this area - with my work:' An Asian Century Manifesto: Global Political Economy of the 21st Century' (2008).

This was produced in 2008 after my role, as a top expert Policy Adviser (Asian Affairs) to the Mayor of London 2000-2007, in which I created a new strategic approach to Asia by London as one of the leading cities of the world (world class city) - involving a major change in institutional thinking across the city. This resulted in substantial economic benefits to London and its global position.

A text copy of this book is available too.
